The Kent & East Sussex Railway is one of the South East’s top tourist attractions and one of England’s leading heritage railways. As a volunteer led organisation supplemented by paid staff, we are now seeking an experienced individual to fulfil the part time role of Diesel Locomotive & On Track Plant Maintenance Fitter.

The Kent & East Sussex Railway is seeking an experienced individual to fulfil the part time role of Diesel Locomotive and On Track Plant Maintenance Fitter within our Locomotive Engineering Department.

The railway operates a fleet of ex British Rail and Industrial diesel electric and diesel mechanical locomotives and units, together with on track plant and machinery such as Tampers, Ballast Regulators and TRAMM's. This equipment requires periodic fuel point exams, inspection, maintenance and fault rectification, in accordance with industry standards and procedures. Knowledge of welding and air pressure vessels would be an advantage.

Candidates should ideally have served a recognised apprenticeship with British Rail or a successor Train Operating Company, covering inspection, maintenance and repair of Diesel Locomotives, Units or On Track Plant. Knowledge of Diesel Engines, Generators, Traction Motors, Cooling Systems, Transmission, Final Drive and Gear Boxes, Air Compressors and Air / Vacuum Brake Systems is desirable. Candidates with relevant experience from a non-railway background will also be considered.

As a team player, the successful candidate will be working with other employees, volunteers and locomotive owners to deliver high levels of availability and reliability of the diesel locomotive and on track plant fleet that in turn supports the business needs of the railway and exceeds customer expectations.

As a Safety Critical role, candidates will be expected to follow laid down procedures that apply to the railway environment in general and specifically around due diligence and compliance against railway vehicle safety standards.
Whilst based at our Tenterden Carriage & Wagon Maintenance workshop, candidates will, on occasion, also be required to work at the Rolvenden Locomotive Depot, planning their workload accordingly.

As a Part Time Role, you will work a variable 3 day week with a competitive salary and benefits package. The Kent & East Sussex Railway is an equal opportunities employer.
